National experts workshop in Poznan, Poland
/Together with the Institute of Logistics and Warehousing (ILiM), WWF Poland organized a meeting regarding the fishing gear tagging within the radio-frequency identification technology (RFID).
RFID uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to the objects. The tags contain electronically stored information and collect energy from a nearby RFID reader’s interrogating radio waves.
During the workshop, the participants discussed the possibility of using this passive technology in the fishing gear tagging as a contribution that can lead to less nets being lost in the future. The ILiM will provide 3 different prototypes of tags that will be tested in cooperation with fishermen from Poland.
The idea of the RFID passive system might be a solution that would allow to easily identify lost nets and to find its owner.
